Service Life of Granite (Industry Common Name: Grade 000) Platforms

Premise: 000 is not a national standard grade, but an indicator from the old national standard GB4987-85; the base material prioritizes Jinan Qinghui Longyan granite.
Distinguish between two concepts: Effective service life maintaining Grade 000 accuracy; Physical service life of the stone itself.

1. Time to maintain Grade 000 accuracy under different operating conditions (maintaining the old 000 flatness tolerance)

1) Ideal Metrology Room (Constant temperature 20±0.5℃, vibration isolation, dust-free, light load, no collisions, correct Airy point support)

  • Maintaining Grade 000 accuracy: 10-18 years
  • Stone body does not crack, overall usable life: 25-40 years; accuracy gradually decays to Grade 00, and it can still be downgraded for use as a 00 platform.

2) Ordinary Constant Temperature Workshop (20±2℃, slight vibration, light load use)

  • Maintaining Grade 000 accuracy: 5-10 years, after which most degrade to Grade 00 level.

3) Non-constant Temperature Ordinary Workshop (Large temperature fluctuations, many iron filings, occasional collisions)

It is almost impossible to maintain Grade 000 accuracy long-term; the flatness will exceed the old 000 tolerance within 2-4 years; only suitable for use in scenarios requiring Grade 00 or below.

Granite is hard but brittle. The following damages are irreversible and cannot be repaired on-site; they can only be sent back to the factory for re-precision grinding (re-grinding can restore the 000 indicator, but it removes a layer of stone and cannot be done repeatedly):

  1. Corner chipping, breakage, internal micro-cracks (impacts, improper lifting);
  2. Incorrect support points, long-term single-point heavy loading, causing gravity deformation of the platform;
  3. Long-term soaking and penetration by cutting fluids, acids, or alkalis;
  4. Direct sunlight, direct air conditioning blowing, and long-term severe temperature shocks;

Deep scratches, chipped edges, and cracks cannot be locally repaired; only overall factory re-grinding is possible. Each time, 0.03-0.1mm of thickness is ground off. A single slab can be ground at most 2-3 times; afterwards, the insufficient thickness leads to a drop in rigidity, and it is completely scrapped.

3. Key Maintenance Recommendations (Extending Grade 000 Accuracy Life)

  1. Environment: Grade 000 indicator platforms should ideally be kept at 20±0.5℃, humidity 50-60%, vibration-isolated, and away from heat sources and air vents;
  2. Support: Strictly follow Airy point support, do not just pad it with a few bricks; the number of support points for large platforms must meet standards to prevent self-weight deflection and deformation;
  3. Usage: Handle workpieces gently, dragging is prohibited; grinding and welding on the surface are prohibited; clean up iron filings and abrasives promptly;
  4. Verification: Grade 000 is recommended for annual metrology; once the measured flatness exceeds the old 000 formula tolerance, either send it back to the factory for re-grinding or downgrade it to Grade 00 for use;
  5. Material: Jinan Qing granite has a low water absorption rate and dense grains, with a service life over 30% longer than ordinary black granite; do not use ordinary decorative granite for high-precision platforms.

4. Key Points for Procurement and Technical Agreements

  1. Do not believe the manufacturer’s claim that “000 grade can last for decades”; decades refers to the lifespan of the stone itself, not the lifespan of maintaining 000 precision;
  2. Specify in the contract: provide annual flatness measurements, and if tolerances are exceeded, the stone can be returned to the factory for grinding to restore precision (stipulate the maximum number of grinding times);
  3. The cost of returning to the factory for grinding is very high, with disassembly, installation, and transportation costs making up the bulk of it. Evaluate the operating environment during selection; if the environment does not meet the requirements, it is not recommended to blindly aim for 000 indicators.

Simple Summary
