Dense, high-quality granite (Jinan Green) itself has very low porosity. Short-term normal humidity will not immediately deform the platform, but long-term high humidity and wet-dry cycles will indirectly affect precision and lifespan; 00/000-grade high-precision platforms are more sensitive to humidity.
1. Stone Body: Microscopic Moisture Absorption and Expansion (Core Issue)
- Granite contains tiny micropores. In a long-term high-humidity environment (>70% RH), water vapor slowly penetrates the micropores, causing extremely minute moisture-induced expansion; it contracts again when the environment dries. Repeated wet-dry cycles will cause a slow drift in flatness, which is most noticeable on high-precision (00, 000-grade) metrology platforms; the impact is relatively smaller on ordinary 0-grade workshop platforms.
- Jinan Green material has a dense crystal structure, and its moisture absorption rate is much lower than that of ordinary marble, offering better moisture resistance, but it is not completely impermeable to water vapor.
- If the surface experiences long-term condensation or water accumulation, water seeping into threaded holes and stone joints will precipitate efflorescence (white frost) after evaporation. This cannot be removed, damages the working surface, and in severe cases, causes the stone surface to powderize.
2. Indirect Impact on Metal Accessories (Very Common)
The platform’s leveling support feet, embedded steel sleeves, and T-slot metal inserts will corrode and rust in humid air:
- Rusting and expansion of metal parts can locally lift the stone, directly destroying the flatness;
- Rust particles falling on the granite surface will penetrate the stone under the influence of water vapor to form rust stains, which are difficult to grind off.
- Matching measuring tools, height gauges, and CMM probes will also condense and rust, leading to measurement errors.
3. Recommended Environmental Standards
Ideal environment for precision granite platforms: Relative Humidity 40%–60% RH
- Short-term: A workshop environment of 60%–70% RH is not a major problem;
- Long-term >70% RH: Dehumidification is mandatory, and dust/moisture-proof covers must be used;
- Condensation on the surface and direct water exposure are strictly prohibited.
4. Simple Maintenance Suggestions
- In humid workshops, cover the platform with a dust and moisture-proof cover when not in use;
- Immediately wipe off any water vapor or water stains on the surface; do not allow water to accumulate for long periods;
- Regularly check the leveling supports and embedded steel sleeves for rust;
- In high-precision metrology rooms, use a dehumidifier to stabilize humidity and reduce wet-dry cycles.
