How to prevent granite countertops from getting damp and moldy

I. Why Does Granite “Absorb Moisture and Mold”?
Granite itself is non-absorbent and does not mold, but it has micro-pores.
Moisture, oil stains, and dust enter the pores → forming stains, water marks, and mold spots.
Humid environment poor ventilation → mold grows on the surface dirt layer.

II. Moisture Prevention Measures (Solving the Root Cause)

  1. Environmental Moisture Prevention (Most Important)
Keep the indoor environment ventilated and dry; control humidity between 40%–60%.
Keep away from water sources, sinks, direct air conditioning drafts, and areas with rising damp.
During humid seasons / in workshops:
    Use dehumidifiers.
Lay moisture-proof mats and non-slip mats on the floor.
Ventilate doors and windows at regular intervals.
  2. Moisture Prevention for Base and Supports
Do not let the platform sit directly on the ground; use stands or blocks to elevate it to ensure air circulation underneath.
Add rubber pads to support feet to block the upward conduction of ground moisture.
For long-term storage: Place wooden strips under the bottom wrap with moisture-proof film.
  3. Moisture Prevention for Packaging and Sealing
    For long-term disuse:
Wipe the surface clean and dry it.
    Cover with a dust-proof and moisture-proof cover.
Place desiccants inside the box or cover.
For wooden box transportation/storage: Line the inside with moisture-proof film and place desiccants in the four corners.

III. Mold Prevention Measures (Surface Protection)

  1. Apply Protective Treatment (Most Effective)
Waxing is not recommended for precision granite platforms, but you can use:
    Granite-specific protective agent (penetrating type)
Stain-resistant, water-resistant, does not affect precision or measurement
Forms a breathable but waterproof protective layer
Apply once every six months to one year.
  2. Prevent Water Accumulation Daily
Strictly prohibit splashing water or washing directly on the platform surface.
Wipe dry water stains, coolant, and oil stains immediately.
Do not use wet mops near the platform.
  3. Keep the Surface Clean
Mold only grows on dust, oil stains, and organic matter; granite itself does not mold.
Wipe regularly with anhydrous alcohol or neutral cleaner.
Avoid leaving food, paper scraps, or fabrics on the platform for a long time.

IV. How to Handle Moisture and Mold
Mold Spots:
Wipe with anhydrous alcohol or neutral mold remover.
Wipe gently with a soft cloth; do not use steel wool.
Dry after wiping, then apply protection.
Water Marks and Moisture Stains:
Dry naturally in a dry and ventilated environment.
For severe cases, use a dedicated stain remover for local treatment.
Do not expose to direct sunlight or bake (will cause deformation).
Severe Long-Term Moisture:
Move to a dry environment and let it sit for over 72 hours.
Check flatness; recalibrate if necessary.
